Late in , the Scioto Mile created 33 new acres of parkland in downtown Columbus. The project, a massive work of environmental rehabilitation, removed lowhead dams from the Scioto River and narrowed the course of the river back to its more natural state.

With miles of multi-use trails stretching from Bicentennial Plaza in the south to North Bank Park in the North, this is a great spot to take a stroll and enjoy both the city and nature. Bicentennial Park hosts free concerts on summer weekends, and a huge set of fountains create a fun environment for kids to play in during the daylight hours. Changing facilities are restrooms are available. By night, sip a local cocktail or grab a burger at Milestone and watch the fountain displays change through the evening.

A trail leading south from Bicentennial Plaza leads you to the Scioto Audubon Metro Park , an important birding area with a nature center, the largest free climbing wall in the nation, and lots of natural areas to explore.

The Scioto Greenways project changed all this, transforming the condition and appearance of the river and its banks. The concept for Scioto Greenways was first presented to Columbus as part of a comprehensive public process that ultimately resulted in the Downtown Strategic Plan. Of all the ideas presented to the community in the Strategic Plan, Idea 12 the Scioto Greenways became priority 1. Scioto Greenways consisted of three primary components: 1 Removal of the low-head Main Street Dam, 2 Restoration of the Scioto River channel to its natural width, and 3 The creation of 33 acres of new urban greenspace complete with 1.

In November , the project began, and working against an aggressive 24 month schedule, during a period of record-low temperatures and record rainfalls, the Scioto Greenways made its public debut right on time in November As a result of these projects, the river's natural ecosystem is healthier today than ever before.

In work began on restoring the Scioto River in a dramatic fashion. It was a long muddy process that seemed like it would never end, but in the fall of the long wait was over. In November of , the ribbon was cut on the brand new Scioto Greenways which has literally transformed the the downtown Scioto River area into a large community playground and gathering place.

Although the river was narrowed considerably, the river actually seems larger. No longer is it constrained by the giant wall running along the east bank. Now the river is comfortably set back with a series of grass embankments and walkways that invite visitors to stroll along the river.
