Christians are supposed to show their love through the way they follow Christ. Then, when that division takes hold, the enemy is the first to accuse us before God. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.
To help us protect our mind in spiritual warfare, God has given us His spiritual armor. Ephesians 6 describes the components of the armor God has given us to stand strong in spiritual battles.
In the Precept Bible Study Method , one way we encourage you to study the scripture is through making lists. If we were to make a list of the spiritual armor God provides for us, it would look like this:. Notice the reference in Ephesians which says to be strong in His strength, not your own.
It is written in the passive voice which means that we receive the action; literally this means God strengthens us, we receive His strength. The battles for your mind come in the form of spiritual warfare and personal attacks. In 2 Corinthians, Paul shares what a spiritual battle looks like and his response to the attack. Philippians helps us understand how to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.
To win the battles of our mind, Paul tells us to have our mind think about the things from this list:. Compare your thoughts to the list of things to think about from Philippians No one can control every single thought in their mind.
But, there are two things to remember:. Most people retreat or digress to try and find peace or solace instead of pressing in and defeat the enemy. Spiritual conflicts most often occur when we advance into new territory that is inhabited by evil spirits. Most Christians are completely unaware that these are real spirit wars, so they retreat at the first sign of conflict, failing to recognize the true source of the battle.
It is important to understand that evil spirits attack by giving you thoughts that are compelling. In other words, they make you feel like you want to do them, even though they are the opposite of your history and nature. Then those same spirits accuse you of having these thoughts and feelings. This starts a spiral down into depression, anxiety, and self-hatred. The truth is that evil spirits have no power over you even though it feels like they do! Rather, you have power over them.
Secondly, these battles come in waves and they will not last forever. And lastly, you probably did nothing wrong to cause this battle. As a matter of fact, you are most likely experiencing this battle because you are doing something right. Here are a few more things to hold onto while you WALK through the valley:. Remember the testimonies in your life. They are weapons of warfare. Revelation says the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
Remember the work you are doing is noble. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you? Remember who you are! The enemy will try and convince you that you are defeated but the truth is that you are a victor! Speak the truth about who you are over yourself with every assault that comes your way. Trust Jesus to keep you! Release the peace within you through singing and proclaiming Jesus. Remember the freedom within you will become the freedom around you.
Praying God will help you with your armor — Love your last line. You may be weak, but He is strong! We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ James ESV Submit yourselves therefore to God.
Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
